The Alpilles, a massif rich in history and tradition
The Alpilles is a low-lying mountain range in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, with a landscape of white limestone rocks. It stretches from south of Avignon to the Arles Camargue and the Crau plain. It is the vestiges of past civilizations that give the Alpilles its personality. The citadel at Les Baux de Provence, the château at Barbentane, the fortress at Tarascon, Glanum and the Antiques Museum at St Rémy, aqueducts, abbeys… all places steeped in the history for which the region is famous. But the charm of the typical Provencal villages of the Alpilles gives it its identity through the traditional festivals that punctuate the seasons. Olive festival, vineyard festival, transhumance festival, feria… It’s impossible to miss the Provencal events that bring the Massif to life and affirm its traditions.
