Avignon, city of the popes
Located in the Vaucluse region (84), at the confluence of the Rhône and Durance rivers, lies Avignon, nicknamed the “City of the Popes” due to the presence of the popes from 1309 to 1423, and currently the largest city in the prefecture. One of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts and historic center, the Popes’ Palace, the Episcopal complex and the Pont Saint-Bénézet (Avignon Bridge) are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Founded by the Phocaeans from Marseille around 539 BC, it became a Roman colony around 121 BC. The famous Pont d’Avignon was begun in 1177 and finished in 1185, with a length of 920 meters, a width of 4 meters and 22 arches. It was the only bridge crossing the Rhône between Lyon and the sea.
The Palace of the Popes, built from 1335 onwards, was to become the largest Gothic building in Europe, and is a must-see.
And Avignon is also known for its famous “Festival d’Avignon”, which has made it a capital of the performing arts since 1947! Dance, theater and music performances enliven the city streets. More than 120,000 spectators come every year to admire shows and actors with established reputations from all over France and the world.
