The Palace of the Popes in Avignon
The Palais des Papes is located in Avignon, in the famous city of the Popes, in the Vaucluse region (84).
Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, it is one of France’s 10 most visited monuments. A 15,000 m² masterpiece, the Palais des Papes in Avignon is the largest medieval fortress and the largest Gothic palace in Europe. The Palace is so imposing that it can be seen from the Alpilles.
Construction of the Palais des Papes took less than 20 years, from 1335 to 1352. It is the work of two Popes: Benedict XII, who built the Old Palace, and Clement VI, builder of the New Palace.
The monument also offers visitors regular events throughout the year, including themed and educational exhibitions, themed tours and concerts.
